Marieke

Marieke Van RansbeeckMarieke Van Ransbeeck has roots in the Belgian folk music scene with numerous groups (Back To The Woods, Queens of Baba, het Brabants Volksorkest) and as a pedagogue and organiser. She began playing the bagpipe at the age of 8 in Gooik with her teacher Jean-Pierre Van Hees. Passing through Ethno Flanders as a teenager she understood for certain her calling as a musician. Like Hans Christian Andersen puts it: “Where words fail, music speaks”. She graduated in 2017 with a master in French Baroque Music Pedagogy from LUCA School of Arts and is currently continuing her studies on the Nordic Master in Folk Music programme.

Her innovative bagpipe style combines different bagpipe, folk and baroque traditions: playing “authentic” and newly composed concert and dance music on the Flemish/French bagpipe, the Swedish Säckpipa and the French Musette de Cour. Marieke aims to uncover the unique spectrum and possibilities of the bagpipe and portay the instrument in a new light.
